The Central Department of Mathematics is the oldest department in the history of science education at Tribhuvan University in Nepal. With the establishment of department on September 20th, 1959, Master Degree Program in Mathematics began.

Postgraduates from this department have excellent academic record that enable them to get further opportunities to pursue higher studies and conduct research in reputed institutes in different part of the world. Most of the graduates of this department are currently working at different universities, campuses, higher secondary schools, government offices and other institutes of the nation. Even some of them are working in the developed countries as well. The department comprises fifteen faculty members:  six professors, three readers, five lecturers and one assistant lecturer.  Among them nine faculty members have doctorial degree in different fields and some are pursuing doctorial degree from national and international universities. There are some part time teaching assistant.


The main objectives of the department are

1. To produce high level man power with M.A./M.Sc., MPhil and PhD degrees. 

2. To conduct post-doctorial research. 

3. To promote basic as well as applied research in Mathematics. 

4. To improve and upgrade the mathematics curricula as required by national needs and international standards.

Master’s Program

Mathematics courses of Masters cover two years. The total marks allotted to first year in Part I and second year in Part II is 500 each. Department has introduced thesis writing for second year students as an optional subject.  Currently, around 100 students admit in the first year (part1) every year.  Seminars and conferences in Mathematics are regular features of the department.

Course Structure

Postgraduate courses have been divided in two parts: first year and second year. Pure as well as applied mathematics are taught in both years. In each year, total 500 marks are allotted. For evaluation, in each part, department conducts internal assessments of 40 percent marks in each subject except thesis writing course for second year students. University conducts board examination of 60 percent marks in each subject. To pass in examination, a student must secure minimum 50 percent marks in each subject.  Only subjective type of questions where conceptual with examples, verifying statements and proving theorems parts are kept. For PhD program after registration, unless two years of duration he/she is not allowed to submit his thesis and  must submit it within 5 years. If not completed in time the registration will be canceled.

Facilities Available

The department has well equipped classrooms, a seminar hall, teachers’ rooms and a computer room. There is a Department Library with update collection of textbooks, reference books, and research journals receive from various institutes on an exchange basis. Presently the department initiated to keep its website as well as internet connection.

Research Program

The department is conducting PhD Program and has enrolled a few PhD scholars.  Presently department has introduced thesis writing course for 2nd year Master level students as an optional subject as well.  Some faculties are involving in research in different fields: Optimization, Dynamical Systems, Harmonic Analysis, Univalent Functions, Functional Analysis, Differential Equations, etc.


The department publishes a biannual research journal “The Nepali Mathematical Science Report” of international repute and has established exchanges relationship with the mathematical journals of many of the worldwide societies.  Every year department organizes seminars/conferences in collaboration with Nepal Mathematical Society and publishes proceedings of the program. 

Institutional Linkages

Under the different programs: Colombo Plan, Full Bright Program, DAAD Program, Erasmus Munds, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation  in different period of time, Nepalese Scholars in Mathematics got opportunities to enter reputed institutes  in different countries to pursue higher studies. The department has maintained good linkage with senior professors of reputed institutes of different parts of the world as well. Senior and reputed professors use to visit department now and then. With this, some faculties of this department as well as other teachers from different campus have got opportunities do scientific collaborations with them. Some students of this department are getting opportunities to pursue further studies. Every year some faculties use to take part on national and international conferences, seminars, workshops, schools etc.
