Introduction

Introduction

Central Department of Mathematics is the oldest department in the history of science education at Tribhuvan University in Nepal. With the establishment of department on September 20th, 1959, Master’s Degree Program in Mathematics began. Postgraduates from this department have excellent academic record that enable them to get further opportunities to pursue higher studies and conduct research in reputed institutes in different parts of the world. Most of the graduates of this department are currently working at different universities, campuses, higher secondary schools, government offices and other institutions of the nation. Some of them are working in the developed countries as well. Now the department runs M.A./M.Sc., MPhil and PhD programs in Mathematics.

The department comprises of fourteen faculty members:  four professors, three readers, and seven lecturers.  Among them nine faculty members have doctoral degree, two have MPhil degree and three are pursuing doctoral degree in different fields of mathematics from national and international universities. There are some part-time teaching assistants also in the department.

Objectives

The main objectives of the department are 

  • To produce high level man power with M.A./M.Sc., MPhil and PhD degrees. 
  • To conduct post-doctoral research. 
  • To promote basic as well as applied research in Mathematics. 
  • To improve and upgrade the mathematics curricula as required by national needs and international standards.

Facilities Available

The department has two classrooms, a seminar hall, teachers’ rooms and two computer laboratories in the old building. The new building of the department is under construction. There is a Department Library with updated collection of textbooks, reference books, and research journals received from various institutes on an exchange basis. The department has limited internet facility.

Research and Publication

The department publishes a biannual research journal “The Nepali Mathematical Sciences Report” of international repute and has established exchange relationships with the mathematical journals of many of the worldwide societies.  Every year, the department organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences in collaboration with the academic institutions from abroad and Nepal itself, including Nepal Mathematical Society. There are regular seminars for M.A./M.Sc., MPhil and PhD students at the department.

Institutional Linkages

Under the different programs viz. Colombo Plan, Fulbright Program, DAAD Program, Erasmus Mundus, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in different periods of time, Nepalese scholars in Mathematics got opportunities to visit reputed institutes of different countries to pursue higher studies. The department has maintained good linkages with senior professors of reputed institutes of different parts of the world as well. Senior reputed professors from abroad keep on visiting the department time and again. With this, some faculties of this department as well as other teachers from different campuses have got opportunities have scientific collaborations with them. Some students of this department are getting opportunities to pursue further studies. Every year some faculties take part in national and international conferences, seminars, workshops and schools.
