Introduction
This department is the oldest department in the history of Science education of Nepal. With the establishment of department on September 20th, 1959 Master Degree program in Mathematics began. Postgraduates from this department have excellent academic record that enable them to get further opportunities to pursue higher studies and conduct research in reputed institutes in different part of the world. Most of the graduates of this department are currently working at different universities, campuses, higher secondary schools, government offices and other institutes of the nation. Even some of them are working developed countries as well. The department comprises twenty eight faculty members: Six Professors, an associate Professor, nine lecturers, an assistant lecturer and eleven part time faculty members with research interests in different fields. Among them nine faculty members have Doctorial Degree and some are pursuing Doctorial degree from national and international universities. Even some are verge of completion of that degree.

Objectives
The main objectives of this department are as follows:
•    To produce high level man power with M. Sc. / M. A., M. Phil and Ph. D. degree.
•    To conduct Post-Doctorial research.
•    To promote basic as well as applied research in Mathematics.
•    To improve and upgrade the mathematics curricula as required by national needs and international standards.

Master’s Program
Mathematics courses of Masters cover two years. The total marks allotted to 1st year in Part I and 2nd year in Part II is 500 each. Department has introduced thesis writing for 2nd year students as an optional subject from academic year 064/065 (007/008) and sixteen students with thesis work have completed their degree.  Around 200 students are admitted in the first year (part1) every year. Currently the department has more than 300 (three hundred) students including both parts. Seminars and conferences in Mathematics are regular feature of the department.

Course Structure
Postgraduate courses have been divided in two parts: 1st year and 2nd year. Pure as well as applied mathematics are taught in both years. Teaching is via of lecture method. In each year, total 500 marks are allotted. For evaluation, in each part, department conducts internal assessments of 20 marks in each subject except thesis writing course for second year students. University conducts board examination of 80 marks in each subject. To pass in examination, student must secure minimum 40 (8 in internal assessment + 32 in final examination) marks in each subject. In final examination ten questions are asked and all questions must be attempt by students but they can choose four questions from “or part” within ten. Only subjective type of questions where conceptual with examples, verifying statements and proving theorems parts are kept. For Ph. D. program after registration, unless two years of duration he is not allowed to submit his thesis and he must submit it within 5 years. In case he could not complete his work, he will be given two years more. By this time also he could not complete his registration will be canceled.

The department is conducting Ph. D. Program and has enrolled a few Ph. D. scholars (3 in numbers).  Presently department has introduced thesis writing course for 2nd year Master level students as an optional subject as well.  Some faculties are involving in research in different fields: Optimization, Dynamical Systems, Harmonic Analysis, Univalent Functions, Functional Analysis, Differential Equations etc.

Every year department organizes seminars/conferences in collaboration with Nepal Mathematical Society and publishes proceedings of the program. From students side as well publishes an annual bulletin entitled “Epsilon- Delta” every year.

Institutional Linkages
